Hi all
Got a stinking cold the past couple of days. Is it a good idea or not to go to the gym for a 1-2 hour workout when you have a cold? I know the body is using more energy to fight the cold so would I be using up vital energy the body needs or will the exercise help things?

I would say no. I've done it before and it made me feel crap. Done it when had a very mild sniffle which was just about okay, but if you have a stinker then rest up!

If it's really bad then no, you should lay off the exercise for a few days and let your body recover. If it's a very slight sniffle then you could probably do something, but 1 or 2 hours sounds a bit much if you are already off colour.
Also, as Paul has said, other gym users don't want to pick up your cold germs.
I run, and generally the rule is if its above the neck (ie a head cold) you are OK to run (moderation is the key though), if it's below the neck (ie on your chest) then rest and recover. It will serve you better in the long run.

Yes, just chill out in front of an old film on the telly! No unhealthy snacks though. That's my idea of getting well.

No! You'll spread it around, and not do yourself any good - rest, rest, rest.

If you feel that you really need to do something, how about a gentle walk. The fresh air will probably do you good, it will lift your spirits as well. Hope you feel better soon.

My gym instructor told me that it puts a lot of strain on the heart to exercise with a cold, because your heart rate is already unnaturally elevated, and it can even weaken it. He was pretty strict about it and whenever he heard me sneeze (due to hayfever)would run up and threaten to send me home.

Hope you are feeling better today and that the cold is improving.
However stay out of that gym till you're better. Enjoy the rest.
Take care.
