Maybe you are looking at the big picture and comparing it to your situation now which may be very different - take small steps, so run ONE length of the block when you next walk the dog. That is all and it will be a lot more than you have done.
Then just keep it consistent and the results will accumulate, and so will the desire to run further etc.
And, most importantly, any negative 'hold' on your mind will lose its power as you will have taken that all important first step as you will then discover that you are in control.

Can't say I'm an expert - I've made several attempts over the last couple of years to get into running. This time around when the excuses for not going ... of which I can find many... start forming in my head I just remind myself that I'll probably never feel like going for a run but can be guaranteed to feel 100 times better after I do. I then just get changed and go out before I can think of any more excuses.

Oh plus the desire to fit into a smaller pair of jeans helps too.

Have you tried jogging for a couple of minutes while you're out with your dog?

Why not consider signing up for one of the 5k Race for Life events coming up this summer, which are held around the country? It would give you something to aim for and is an achievable distance, which you can either run or run/walk on the day. You will be surrounded by people of all ages, abilities and sizes - including many who will walk the course and not run at all - and the atmosphere is fantastic. Taking part in my first Race for Life two years ago gave me the motivation to carry on running, take part in half marathons and make it part of my regular exercise routine. Good luck with your running.

I agree with Silvy Porker - I started off with Race for Life and now regularly run 25 miles a week, take part in half marathons etc.

Perhaps if you used to run a lot, you are looking at where you are now to where you were then and it's just too big a leap (a bit like when you have 6 stone to lose you don't feel like starting the diet because the target is too unattainable).

Do Race for Life and then see how you feel - 3 miles is attainable with a few weeks training for most people, but don't pressurise yourself. See how you feel when you've finished. If you decide that running isn't your thing now, do something else that you will enjoy.

Ruth, I'm the same trying to get back into it.

I put some really catchy music on my ipod and jog/walk--trying to jog for a few more seconds each time. it gives me a real buzz, it's just getting myself our the house in the first place which is hard!

Get a ball and go to a park with your dog.

Throw the ball and race after it trying to get there before your dog.

Repeat.

Make it fun.

... poor dog - it'll need therapy if that happens!
