..........and if you walk continuously for 10 mins minimum you'll notch up aerobic steps too. I managed to do 4150 aerobic steps making a total of 13000 yesterday, my highest count to date.

Wow Emm - that's amazing! I didn't even do 2,000 yesterday, but then I wasn;t outside the door all day. Worked from home and it was lousy weather so I didn't even make it to M&S!
I suppose the advantage of working from an office is, even if you sit at a desk all day, it's further to walk to the loo and the coffee point!
Going to look at washing machines today so will dump the car at one end of the retail park and walk everywhere in between.

I have managed 425 steps so far, and that't just pottering around the office - I do keep walking to people's desks instead of sending them emails though so I can add more steps!!
I'm going to try a brisk walk at lunchtime and see if I turn aerobic!
The distance is probably a bit off at the moment because I haven't got anything to measure my stride with.

I wouldn't worry so much about the distance - I'm just trying to increase the steps I make every day. BTW I set my stride at 65cm.

I'm not overly worried about distance - like you say it is the number of steps that's the target.
I've just got back from my lunch time walk and I managed to turn aerobic - I'm now at 3272 steps, of which 2404 (21 mins worth) were aerobic. It's telling me I've burned 109 cals, so I can eat about two thirds of the Milky Way I've just walked to the shop and bought

Well done Emm and Teresa excellent walking results. I wish I'd been using one the beginning of the week when I was rushing round all day I could have quantified how exhausted I was. I'm taking it easy today (sitting backing History books at the moment) as I have my first swimming lesson tonight and this morning my joints were so sore I could hardly move. I'm looking forward to it in a very nervous way.

Let me know how it goes - I've signed up for lessons too but I don't start for a couple of weeks.

Girls, Harriet's posted some articles on walking and pedometers in the Library under Running. The second article's good - average Brit does 4,000 something steps a day, so even increasing that to 6,000 something is better than nothing. And apparently you do walk further than normal when you've got your pedometer on

Got my pedometer today too! It was nearly dark though by the time I had finished programming it, but it is nearly 3000 steps to the green bridge and back (my brisk evening walk), and most of these were aerobic steps. Can't wait to see what a 'normal' days steps are for me.

I managed 18,416 steps by the end of today, but that included my running as well. Without the run it was about 8,000, but that's a less usual day as I walked to work today and I'm only going to manage that once this week.
Like you say Sue, it will be interesting to see what I get on a normal day - not many I think!
I can see why you walk more when you've got one on though.

It's great in that respect isn't it? - I put mine on first thing and take it off last (kinda desperate for every step). And like scales it doesn't really matter what the number is as long as it's going in the right direction. I hope the love affair lasts.

Couldn't wait to see how many steps I did in a day so clipped it on this morning, and so far so good! I do think it will keep me motivated to keep moving! Nice one Em and Fiona, thanks for recommending this

I didn't do any particular walking yesterday, but by parking my car in the farthest corner of the car park each time I went to a shop (and not moving it between if there was a bit of a walk) I still managed to clock up over 6000 steps, which I was quite pleased with considering.
I'm already at 68 this morning!!

All this talk of pedometers has made me want this Omron one. I have a basic one somewhere but think the battery has gone. Mmmm am very tempted...
Well done on your inspiring steps everyone.

I got to about 12,500 yesterday, but about half of that was the run I went on. Definately haven't got the stride set correctly because by midday it said I'd only been 4km, but I'd run 4 miles by that point already!
I.m not too interested in the calories or distance, its mainly the steps that I'm interested in.
10 mile run today, so should be easy to meet today's target!!

Awesome stuff Emm! what a difference since January! Way to go!
I'm loving this! - clocked up just under 16000 the last 2 days! Would recommend getting a pedometer - really motivates you to keep moving!

After the Great North Run - and a 2 mile coastal walk to find the car afterwards - I clocked up my highest number of steps so far - over 30,000.
Oh, and a really good training tip - when you go to the loo, always stand facing away from the toilet so that if your pedometer slips off your waistband, it goes on the floor and not down the toilet bowl...

I have had an Omron Walking Style for about 3 years and find it works really well despite being in the washing machine twice! U have set my stride at 90cm, is that about average or OTT?

Now that is impressive! I set my stride at 75cm, but I've got short legs!

I still haven't set mine up I was trying to work out if there was anywhere in the house I could take 10 strides in a straight line to average them out as the instructions say but there isn't - I still need to find a screwdriver to take the back off as well.

Hannah I don't think my stride is as long as that and I've got reasonably long legs. I do remember faffing around trying to measure 10 strides, which of course are very different indoors in your slippers than they are outdoors in your trainers!
Someone mentioned measuring your stride on the beach - great idea as you can see where your 10 footprints are

Jean if you've got the same Omron one as most of us have, there's a metal thingy included in the pack that's for taking the screw out.

Well I set the pedometer up this morning whilst eating breakfast - nearly lost the screw but managed in the end - guessed stride length as it varies a lot anyway depending on stiffness of joints. So far today I've clocked up 5134 steps which would suggest I'm on target for 10,000 in the day if I keep up the same level of activity this afternoon/evening.

Is that from experience Teresa??? My sunglasses had the same watery end when I went a youth camp in Taize, France when I was a teenager - they were one of those very deep toilets! Imagine spending the rest of the holiday with no sunglasses and no makeup!!

In my spring clean these past few days, I've found no less than 4 pedometers! 2 were free from Kelloggs but the 4th looks a bit more promising and it's even got instructions!!

... that's my problem too Jean. Never mind - it's better than sitting around all day not walking at all.
