I must have ten pedometers - the worse one being the Weightwatchers one - when I first used it I thought I was doing brilliantly but for every ten steps you take it logs over twenty - I enjoyed the points I thought I was earning and wondered why I wasn't losing anything! A good pedometer would be a good motivator - boy, do I need one!

Go to a good running store. You need to set your pedometer to match your stride and they can help you do that and also show you the range.

I have a sony ericsson W580i phone, it has a pedometer built in, and is fantastic, worth considering if you are up grading your mobile.

I was treated to an Omron Walking style II and am very pleased with it. If you go on their website they claim high degrees of accuracy and it certainly seems to be pretty accurate. Also records aerobic steps as well so I have been able to set my goal to at least 10000 aerobic steps a day and 12000 over all. I have been able to keep to that for the last couple of weeks.
What I particularly like about this one is that it is on a little strap, it has a good strong clip so that you don't lose it down the toilet as I have managed to before, or drop it on the floor so often, and you can wear it round your neck or in a pocket, or a handbag or whatever. I haven't tried it in a handbag yet. It was expensive, £28, but as I have lost a few down the loo or broken them by dropping them when the clip failed or just got mixed up with my rolls of fat! and got pushed off my belt - I think it may work out fairly cost effective in the end. No sign of any free one yet that I thought I would give to my best beloved. I think just having a pedometer and wearing it all the time is a help to keep up to the mark. I very often nip down to the post or the paper shop because I am short of steps for the day whereas I wouldn't otherwise know.

Hi to all, I got a rather expensive pedometer as a present a couple of years ago, and still haven't figured out how to set it up. Three of my teenage Grandchildren have also had a go and it foxed even them. It is just too complex showing(alledgedly) not only distance walked but number of steps, time taken, actual time, calories burned etc. etc. I had a twenty year old pedo until three years ago when it got soaked and stopped working. It was brilliant. It recorded distance covered in miles and 1/8ths. It used no batteries nothing. Dead simple and dead accurate, unfortunately it is now also dead. Anyone know where something like this can be found?? Best Wishes Ron.

Blast! I've just discovered that I need to walk to M&S and back 3 times a day to get to my 10,000 steps

This is bad news (a) for my bank balance and (b) for my diet

Of course, I could just walk somewhere else

You got your pedometer then Fiona? My average step count is around 8000 (yesterday I did only 3000 due to feeling unwell) but did 11/12 hundred while away in Norfolk. It's far more enjoyable walking with someone and preferably away from traffic. I do find it a little depressing though because 10000 is what I need to do on an average day to maintain my weight!!! I don't want to maintain. Perhaps I'll go to M&S tomorrow (the one near you Fiona)?!!

Wow that's some amount of walking Emm. My problem is I spend most of the day either sitting in an office or sitting in the house working.

Absolutely - I really enjoyed going for a walk in the hills with Sue, Cally and Jackie a couple of weekends ago.

Good grief - it's absolutely tipping it down here - I guess everyone else's rain has ended up here now! I wondered why it had suddenly gone dark

.... I suspect that's one of these generalisations Emm. The main thing is you're probably walking more than you did before now you're conscious of what the pedometer tells you. Gosh I'm just happy to have done over 4,000 today! Will build up gradually I think.

......a little tip to gain a few steps on the ped - put off going to the loo as long as poss, I've clocked an extra 100 steps jiggling around on the spot.
I've also started parking the car furthest from the entrance.

What Pedometer are you using Emm - I've had a few cheap ones in the past and not been very impressed by them. That might just be false economy as perhaps if I spent a reasonable amount on one I would get a better return?

I bought the Omron Walking style II that Fran Mason wrote about above - I paid £18 from Amazon (although the trendier colours were more expensive!!) So far it seems pretty accurate.

Thanks - I did take a look at that on Amazon myself and it does get some pretty good reviews. I'll take a proper look when I get home.

... and it tells the time too! Someone asked me the time when I was out just now and I didn't have my watch on, but I was able to tell her how many steps I'd taken today - er, what time it was. Not sure how suitable it is for running - Julia's the expert on running "in the zone"

Emm - do you have any websites that tell you how many steps you should be doing a day? I've just bought an Omron pedometer form amazon. I presume they measure miles too - I thought it would be useful training for the rescheduled Sunwalk

No websites that I know of just the literature that comes with the ped - 10000 steps daily to maintain weight, 15000 to reduce it.

Did you get the same one as Emm? That's what I got - it certainly measures km but I don't know if you can get it to do miles. You could just convert of course

How about this site?

Maybe the more expensive Omron's do miles - anyway we should all really be working in new money and whatever a day's tally is tomorrow should be 1 metre further!!

Had to order something from Amazon today - you'd be surprised how easy it is with their one click ordering to "accidentally" add something to your order, say like a pedometer....

Got a one month free trial of their Prime delivery service, so it should be here tomorrow!

Oooooh, my pedometer has just arrived - I will now be walking up and down the office to get my daily count up! I feel a lunch time walk coming on too...
