Hi everyone ... not sure if I should have posted this under nutrition or exercise, so trying both ....

I go the gym at 8 or 8.30 at night most nights of the week. Like most people these days, I start early, I work long hard days and some nights I have absolutely no energy.

Can anyone advise on what I should be eating when? I am really overweight, but also want (and am getting) much fitter so need to eat, just not sure when and what (and am veggie, to boot!)

Am trying hard to maintain enthusiasm, but when mojo doesn't come to the gym with me, it can be v disheartening!!!!

All/any advice very gratefully received!!!

Keep it varied and interesting and try not to eat too late at night.
I once heard that you should "eat breakfast like a king, eat lunch like a queen and eat dinner like a pauper"!

If you can obtain a copy of the South Beach Diet - its well worth a look at some of the menus and recipes. Its based on good healthy eating with low carbs.

Good Luck - great photo

It depends on what you do and when. But for me its about an hour from home to the gym, so I have some cereal when I get up. Then straight after excersise (before showering) Ill eat a banana.

You should try and eat something like that, maybe pasta? etc right away which contains carbs as your body will burn it off.

Perhaps the late gym isnt helping either? Youre excersising when your body is at its most tired, and then trying to sleep after the exersion. Maybe try it in the morning or lunchtime if possible and see if that helps?

Hi everyone

I live only 8 minutes from my gym but work almost 2 hours journey from home so it's very difficult to fit in gym sessions. My problem is, like Ginny, I get home late and then go the gym (usually exhausted) then get home and need to eat something quickly - before I go to bed.

Someone suggested that I eat 'breakfast' in the evenings (like a pauper) - a bowl of porridge maybe - which is a good idea but the idea of stodgy porridge sitting in my stomach all night doesn't appeal.

Best of luck
Ruth

Have you tried eating your evening meal at lunch time and a snack in the evening after exercise. I dont mean cooking at work but I often take in a really hearty soup, stew or last nights leftovers for lunch if i know I'm exercising after work. I also tend to eat them later than normal so I still have a bit of energy left in the evening to exercise. Then after exercise especially if its near bedtime I have a light snack like a sandwich or a boiled egg on toast. Preferably something light but with protein to help the body recover.
