I'll bear that in mind when I have the wholemeal rice/pasta and not have such a big portion. I tend to put tons of veg into risotto - parsnip, swede, carrots, peas, sweetcorn, mushrooms, onions, leeks, whatever I have, along with a spoonful of Thai curry paste, so it's pretty filling. In my unhealthy days I used to pile loads of Parmesan cheese on the top as well!

The one thing that worries me is whet...

Reply by Matthew Gabriel

Whole meal foods have lower GI/GL than "white" bread, pasta and rice. They keep your blood glucose more even because they are absorbed more slowly, and thus you do not feel hungry as soon after eating as you would if you had not had whole meal.

Ultimately though weight loss is about the total amount of calories that you eat. If you eat the same amount of whole meal calories, you will stay the same weight....

Reply by Jaki T

I'll get some wholemeal basmati (if possible) and will let you know. My favourite meal is risotto and I usually make it with a mix of rice and quinoa (9 oz to a litre of liquid - water/cider or wine).

Reply by Emily C

Never had much success with wholemeal rice... anyone got any tips for making it more palatable?

Reply by Jaki T

I read in the paper (Body & Soul?) this morning that if you switch to wholemeal bread, pasta and rice, then the fat should shift from your stomach. Off I go shopping again.... It's definitely worth a try.

Good for you Emily. I have also been creeping back into clothes, and get a boost from it. Couldn't manage one crunch a few weeks ago, I was surprised that I was able to do 50 tonight. In sets of 10 of course....

Reply by Vivien Zarucki

I've started doing sit-ups on a swiss ball at the gym - it's basically a space hopper without the horns. I thought I was quite good at sit ups till I used this - they're much more difficult, but still only use your own body weight. Worth a go if you're after something a bit more challenging....

Reply by Emily C

Keep at it!! Does require perseverance. Initially I could barely manage 10.
I still need to shift the layer of fat before any of this action is going to be worth it!!

It is advisable to wear pants that fit! For the past few months I had been living in skirts at work as my trousers were all too small and I refused to buy any new ones. Slowly they're creeping back into my everyday wear which is great......

Reply by Becky Hill

75 sit ups?

You will be more comfortable, and it looks better! There is nothing worse than being constricted by pants that are too tight... (for a guy at least).

I need to start Emily C's sit up regimen. While there is still flab covering my abdominals, I am losing at 1/4 lb per day, and I want them to be ripped and, (bang bang) rock hard!

I'm also eating healthily, trying to use a medium sized plate. I still want to lose another 16 pounds but I've got back into some clothes I haven't worn for a few years. If you are a keen swimmer but get bored, or wwant to get better at it, I recommend the following link...

Conjured up lovely images. I am trying to walk and jog my way out of icky flabby bits, so good luck to everyone. I am also hoping that Hula Hooping will help, so far it has given me some very attractive bruises around the middle, so my muffin is multi coloured....

Reply by Tree Hugger

Tone your tummy muscles with exercise, and reduce the fat with a good diet.
Running burns off my fat, but I need to do crunchie type exercises to tone up the muscles too.

Swimming definitely helps keep it under control to a degree. It is annoying because the rest of me is fairly toned now, just this big lump in the middle that won't go away. If I wore clothes that were too small for me then I would have a muffin top to.
