www.fitday.com is better - although American - and it's free for the online tracking tool!

For chilli I tend to use Quorn mince. With the addition of some kidney beans and chopped tomatoes (and cummin) it tastes not that different to normal mince (to me anyway).
I am doing a lot of looking up the calories of different foods lately. It is a real eye opener to realise how high some foods are in calories and how high the fat content is.

Go to the home page and then click on About Me. There is an option to upload a photo. Browse on your hard drive for a photo and then click on it and then when you get back to About Me click on Update My Profile. (I hope that is right).

Most food packaging also shows how many calories are in what - that's how I keep on top of things.

Does anyone else have trouble calculating the calorie values of home cooked food? We're trying to cook meals from scratch but it seem to make counting calories much harder.

hi caroline, it is tricky counting the cals in homemade foods. you need some good scales (digital) and weigh evrything you use looking at all the calorie contents. its a pain but once youve cooked it you will know for the next time. also it sounds sad but have a good look at calorie content before you start cooking your meals, you may be surprised/depressed how many cals are in your fave foods
good luck

I'd recommend the VidaOne software from www.vidaone.com for tracking calorific intake and exercise. I don't mean to advertise, but I've tried out the software and it's great. There's a free demo. I'm waiting until a version that's compatible with my phone comes out in two months' time though. Then you can just manually input the data into this site as there isn't too much tracking customisability here. (No offence to the creators of course! I love the simplicity of this so far. It's a great idea and I'm sure my girlfriend will be satisfied when positive results are e-mailed to her.)

I found some really good kitchen scales a year or so ago that have calorie info for loads of basic food stored in them. You just weigh the food, tell the scales what it is and they tell you the calories - perfect for cooking recipies from scratch.
I think they tell you fat grams etc as well but I only count the calories or it gets too complicated!
I believe I got them from a Lloyds pharmacy but I'm sure you can find them online.

I don't usually bother to count every calorie, just have an educated guess in order to keep each meal within about 600 cals.
But, have you SEEN how many cals are in a tub of innocent-looking taramasalata? Nearly a thousand - that's more than half a day's intake

I read all the posts in this thread and then logged in to www.fitday.com
This was just what I have been hunting for. Most of the cal counting sites I had found when googling were pay sites. I know it's American but you can add custom figures for items like smoothies and Tuna light lunches etc that I know the cal count for.
Many thanks for the recomendation.
Good luck to all of you with your fitness plans.

Hilly! I don't believe it - an editor and you don't use spellcheck! Now, do you see the little symbol at the top left corner of the box????

Gordon, wouldn't worry about it - check out the "pedometer" thread - they're not exactly the best ones out!
