Is it just me or does anyone else have trouble with weighing themselves?

I can weigh myself 3 times in 1 minute and each time vary by at least a pound. I am pretty sure it is not me hovering around lifting a leg and trying to get a better result. I would say it was the scales but my other half has tried it and not had any problems.

Me too. I find the flooring affects the reading too for some reason. I generally take an average of three. My scales are digital so the reading is easy to see. The variation can be so great sometimes that I am now thinking I need to bin them.

Have a look at the feet of the scale - there may be a little rubber 'foot' missing which may not appear obvious at first but that is where the sensors connect to. Even though I have hard floors I only get a clear reading on the flattest part of the tiled floor - then it comes up the same all the time.

Are your scales on a hard or carpeted surface? Carpet's are very bad for affecting scales. I have a set of (not particularly expensive) Hanson electronic scales, use them on a hardwood floor. I always get the same weight on them to within a quarter of a pound.

My parents used to have a set of scales that used to weigh up to about a stone different depending on where you stood. As a teenager I always stood on the outside edge to get the lightest possible (but highly inaccurate) reading.

My flat is tiled, and I don't think it's level, so I have a particular tile with the scales pointing in the same direction to weigh myself each time. It seems to be reproducable.

I used to weigh myself at the gym with one of those slidy weighty things you move along to counterbalance against your weight, but then I realised it varied by about 5 kilos so I went out and spent about 50 quid on a good Tanita body fat/scales combo.

I find that it gives a decent approximation of your body fat, and if I've lost some of that then I'm not as bothered if the actual weight takes longer to shift.

I've been working out for three weeks now and I'm desperately tempted to check my progress, but I'm holding strong and waiting till the month is up!

On the concrete garage floor first thing in the morning. Digital scales as I prefer these.

Anyone got those fancy scales which do fat monitoring or something?

I've got a set, a simple thing like a cup of coffee will put the fat % up a bit and a few pounds on.

Yup. Digital Body fat, BMI, Hydration, Muscle Mass.
Problem is that I think it senses the weight while I'm still moving.
Ie I cant get onto it fast enough. I think if there was more delay before it took its reading, it would not vary the way it does over the range of a pound (+- half pound) on a roughly 14.5 st. person.

On the good side, I believe that the bodyfat percentage calculator works better now that my thighs do not touch when I'm standing on the scale.
Just noticed this two days ago! Woohooo!

Same here - the swimming has done wonders to my legs. I can also see the display over my stomach as well now
Think I'll stick to my normal digital scales for now.

Wait! After reading about flat floors and the scale's feet, i placed mine so the at the feet of mine were on flat flooring instead of in the cracks of the tile, and lo and behold, 4 weighings EXACTLY the same!

I had been somewhat irritated since I paid 50 bucks for the thing 5 months ago, that it gave inconsistant results!

Thanks for the help!

My scales are always hopping about although that could be down to my poor diet and exercise regime lately But I find it much easier to go over to Boots every week and weigh in at least they never move their scales.

I use one of those Tanita body fat scales. I find them pretty useful. I don't measure my body fat as frequently, usually every coupld of weeks or so, and it is very sensitive to water content fluctuations so you need to do it at the same time (they recommend the afternoon as your water levels are most stable then). Since January my body fat has decreased from 30 percent to 24 percent, so I'm pretty happy with that.

It also seems relatively accurate. Whenever my mates come around they all have a go, and the body fat percentage was pretty much what you'd expect for each individual based on appearance.
